The Triple P-Positive Parenting Program® is a multi-level, parenting and family support strategy. Triple P aims to prevent behavioural, emotional and developmental problems in children by enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents. The system was developed by Professor Matt Sanders and colleagues from the Parenting and Family Support Centre in the School of Psychology at The University of Queensland.
You may recognise that parents have differing needs and desires regarding the type, intensity and mode of assistance they may require. Triple P addresses these differing needs through its levels. The Triple P system is designed to maximise efficiency, contain costs and ensure the program has wide reach in the community.
The program targets the developmental periods of infancy, toddlerhood, pre-school, primary school and adolescence. Within each developmental period the reach of the intervention can vary from being very broad (targeting an entire population) or quite narrow (targeting only high-risk children).
Triple P incorporates five levels of intervention of increasing strength for parents of children from birth to age 16. As a practitioner, you may be interested in using one or more of these five levels of intervention.
Level 1. In using this strategy, your organisation would provide parents with access to information about parenting through a coordinated media and promotional campaign using print and electronic media. This level of intervention aims to increase community awareness of parenting resources, to encourage parents to participate in programs, and to create a sense of optimism by depicting solutions to common behavioural and developmental concerns.
Level 2. This intervention involves brief, individual or seminar-based consultation with parents and caregivers. Level 2 interventions provide topic specific guidance to parents of children with mild behaviour difficulties, with the aid of user-friendly parenting tip sheets and videotapes that demonstrate specific parenting strategies. If you are interested in running seminars for parents or conducting brief consultations, a Level 2 Triple P training course might be appropriate.
Level 3. This is a 4-session intervention targeting children with mild to moderate behaviour difficulties and includes active skills training for parents. If you regularly conduct brief consultations with parents and caregivers regarding their child/teenager’s behaviour, a Level 3 Triple P training course may be suitable.
Level 4. Level 4 interventions are more intensive than lower level interventions. You can run a level 4 intervention with individual parents, groups of parents or simply by guiding parents who are working from a Triple P self-help parenting book. Level 4 interventions take between 8 to 10-sessions and are for parents of children with more severe behaviour difficulties.
Level 5. Often practitioners work with parents and caregivers experiencing relationship conflict, parental depression or high levels of stress. These parents often benefit from a more intensive family intervention program. Level 5 is usually delivered to parents after they have undertaken a Level 4 intervention in an individual consultation format. If you regularly work with parents who are struggling to cope with child behaviour concerns along with relationship or personal difficulties, then a Level 4 and Level 5 combination training course might interest you.
Triple P has been developed through more than 30 years of clinical research trials. The program is based on contemporary knowledge, has been well tested in international research and has been found useful by many parents.
Prerequisites
As Triple P Provider Training courses are offered only to professional practitioners, post-secondary qualifications are required in Health, Education, or Social Services. Practitioners should have some knowledge of child/ adolescent development and have some experience working with families.
